Open Gym Report: Warren Central High School
- Updated: September 30, 2021
The one thing you know with Warren Central is that you are always going to get a tough game. And that they are going to be there at the end. In 2018, they made it through a 32-0 season in cardiac fashion on their way to a state title by winning many games by less than 5 points. The fortunes have changed over the last 3 years.
Senior Chandler Jackson was a starter the last two seasons and watched a Malik Stanley free throw go in and back out to end the game and last year watch Sean Black’s 7 foot baseline floater bounce off the rim at the buzzer in the rigorous Sectional 10 for both.
“We are looking for a different ending this year”, says Jackson, who has some DII and NAIA level offers but also some D1 interest. His 44% shooting from the 3-point line to go with his 6’5″ frame should be a heavy draw for college coaches.
Louisville commit D’Ante Davis is in his second year, along with his Dad (head coach D’Andre Davis). His brother D’Andre is already a starter at Louisville and heads into his sophomore year. The younger Davis has some work he wants to put in before he heads to college.
“We have a goal list for this year like winning county, the sectionals and state”, he says. Jackson and Davis are the only returning starters from last season. If this is going to happen, the two senior leaders are going to have step up their games and get buy-in from teammates. Watching open gym, the Warriors have some good, young, hungry talent. Senior guard Paul Chandler looks ready to step into the point guard role. He directs his teammates during the scrimmages. Sophomore guard Robert Walker was impressive shooting the ball and creating his own shot. Junior Darius Banks, a high flying guard, should see some minutes. And 6’5″ freshman Javon Guess has a chance to be a special player. He could be a factor in his first season.
Coach Davis knows that playing in the MIC is going to be a grind but is ready for the challenge. “Our guys are working hard, and we have some guys to get ready,” he says. Having two seniors that have been in tough battles for two years will certainly help. And there could be some surprises. Watching the young players compete in open gym, they look hungry and ready to contribute.
Expect Warren Central to be who they are and play like warriors. “Never Fold” is their moniker for a reason.
