The best battle in the trenches was between Crispus Attucks and Warren Central. The Tigers took a 58-53 win. But Homestead sent notice also with their quality Top 10 win over Cathedral in OT. Who’s #1 right now?
10. Hammond – 1-1
When you are Class 3A and go toe to toe with #1 Class 4A Lawrence North and lose by one on a last second miss, you deserve to be here. Hammond led most of the game, and showed they have potential at any level. Chicago implant Seniors Reggie Abrams and Sean Burrews (both 15 points against LN) are really tough.
9. Gary West – 3-0
Most of the polls don’t even have West in the Top 20. Wrong. Too much talent here. Top 20 nationally ranked 6’8″ junior Jalen Washington is tough as is junior point guard Quimari Washington. They also have Crishawn Christmas, who has D1 offers and 6’9″ tank Mason Nicholson who should and will get plenty. There will be plenty of fireworks against Hammond on Friday.
8. Cathedral – 3-1
The Irish were missing Peter Moe this week and are hoping he will be ready to go the rest of the way? They could use him Friday night against Warren Central. They have plenty left behind junior guard Tayshawn Comer and senior guard and Air Force commit Vincent Brady.
7. Warren Central – 1-1
The Warriors battled but lost a tough one to Attucks 58-53. Malik Stanley did his thing with 23 points, but Attucks was tougher and a little more poised down the stretch. Look for this team to move up. They can show where they are on Friday again at home against Cathedral.
6. Homestead – 3-0
Homestead outlasted #8 Cathedral 71-65 in 2 OTs this past weekend. Luke Goode was spectacular with 36 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists to put it on the Irish. They have several tough tests over the next 30 days Brownsburg, Warren Central, FW Blackhawk) to measure themselves against the best.
5. FW Blackhawk – 3-0
Blackhawk made light work of Hamilton (OH) 57-30 in what was supposed to be a big test. Can they do the same to Silver Creek this weekend and make a big statement? Mr. Basketball candidate Caleb Furst is shining so far.
4. Siver Creek – 3-0
Trey Kaufman is the Mr. Basketball candidate, but it’s his teammate Kooper Jacobi (Toledo commit) who has been playing lights out. His 44 points powered a win over Clarksville last week. But…FW Blackhawk is no Clarksville. They get their first big test of the season on Saturday against Caleb Furst and the rest.
3. Attucks – 2-0
Attucks took a hit in the mouth early against Warren Central and then showed they are the better team down the stretch right now in the 58-53 win. Isaiah Stafford may be the best senior guard in the state and played that way with 23 points. Can they blend in all of the talent have everyone buy in to TEAM? If so, they are the team to beat.
2. Carmel – 3-0
Carmel is Carmel. Again. Smart and fundamental. With talent. Brian Waddell may be the most talented and is playing like he wants to play D1 at the next level. His 27 points helped smash Lawrence Central last week. They could easily be #1.
1. Lawrence North 1-0
The Wildcats almost took a stumble out the gate but prevailed against a game Hammond squad 52-51. Junior guard CJ Gunn took over in the 4th quarter, and said no. His 19 points lead the comeback with Shamar Avance chipping in 14. They miss the depth that Omar Cooper gives them and looked vulnerable. But…it’s one game. Can they run the table and finish last year’s business?
Knocking at the door: Pike, Westfield, Lafayette Jeff, New Albany.
