“I don’t really like to talk a whole lot”, North Central sophomore guard Leland Walker warns me. Walker may be a little shy with the microphone, but he does plenty of talking with his game on the court.
Walker, ranked #4 on Prep Ball Stars Fresh 15, was one of the few bright spots last year for North Central as a freshman and averaged 14.4 points as they struggled to a 7-17 record last year. Historically, North Central has been one of the top teams in the state, but the last two years have been rebuilding ones, which have them looking for their first win in the MIC Conference, one of the toughest in the country, in two years.
“I want to be one of the top players in the state and I want to win some games in the MIC”, says Walker when asked his goals this year.
And don’t let the shyness behind the microphone fool you. Walker has game and is relentless. He is super explosive and has created posters and highlights already at the expense of players. He is a big-time scorer and a winner.
“Leland is really explosive in the open court and has loads of potential”, says Damon Turner, AAU head coach for Team Teague.
Team Teague 2022 fought their way unto the Gold Gauntlet and won the whole event this past summer. Walker was a key factor in the spring and summer. He is also plenty good-natured with his AAU teammates Tayshwan Comer and Dayveon Turner as they joke around about the upcoming season. So far, Walker has one offer from IUPUI, but several programs have him on the radar.
Look for Walker to break out and explode this year as a sophomore and to be one of the top players in the area and state.
