The historic City Championship kicks off this week. This tournament is sure to bring plenty of excitement as it does every year. Here are 23 players to watch this week on the road to the Championship:
Tayshawn Comer, Cathedral
Comer is averaging 15.6 points and 6 points assists (top 10 in the state). The 6’1″ junior has had a phenomenal year leading the Irish to a 10-1 record, including a big win last week over #2 Carmel. Comer is one of the top PGs in the state and has offers from Ball State, Miami Of Ohio and IUPUI.
Antoine Hurns, Washington
Hurns, a 6’7″ junior, is averaging 1.5 points points and 6.0 rebounds per game, including a 40 point explosion in the GIAC tournament last month. He has some really good skill and looks to lead the Continentals into a deep run this week.
Noah Carter, Chatard
This is the last city tournament for Carter, who is averaging 12.2 points on the season. Can they avenge the 56-50 loss to Washington this week?
Isaiah Stafford, Attucks
Stafford, a senior PG from Illinois, made good use of his move to Indiana for his senior season and is averaging 19.4 points, 4.1 rebounds and 4.3 assists for the Top 10 state ranked Tigers. He has offers from Chicago State and Indiana Wesleyan.
Gabe McQuay, Tech
I was up close and personal for McQuay’s hot streak against Tindley earlier this year where he went off for 37 points. The Howe transfer is averaging 16.7 points. Can he lead the Titans to a deep run in the tournament?
Aaron Humphrey, Tindley
Humphrey is one of the most improved players in the state and leads Tindley with 18 points and 10 rebounds per game. The 6’6″ junior is Top 10 in the state in rebounding.
Aidan Cannon, Ritter
Cannon is one of the top scorers in the City with 20.4 points per game. The 6’0′ senior can really get it going and looks to lead Ritter to a first round win over Herron.
Qushawn Ware, Attucks
Ware, a 6’5″ sophomore, has been a role player this year for Attucks after coming back from prep school, but he is a player capable of getting it cooking. A big game player, this could be his week to do so.
Trey Flatt, Covenant Christian
Flatt is a senior and the coach’s son (Scott Flatt). He plays with a high basketball IQ and is a top defender. He also get buckets to the tune of 19.4 points to to go with 3 steals.
Vincent Brady, Cathedral
Brady, an Air Force commit, does it all for the Irish with averages of 14.7 points and 6.2 rebounds. He is making good use of his full year of playing for the Irish after transferring from Lawrence North.
Jayden Pinkston, Tindley
Pinkston, 6’4″ with a 33 inch vertical measured at Prep Ball Stars Combine, is one of the top sophomores in the state. He averages 14.7 points and 5.7 rebounds and is also a good defender with his length.
Jaylen Carson, Attucks
Carson was offered last week by IU Kokomo. The 6’7″ senior has great size and a motor and averages 10.7 points and 8.5 rebounds in a balanced attack for the Tigers.
Dayveon Turner, Tech
Turner is also a player that can get it rolling offensively. The 6’1″ junior, who transferred from Anderson, is averaging 15.7 points and looks to help Tech move on tonight against Purdue Poly and deep into the tournament.
Jalen Hooks, Attucks
Hooks, 6’7″, is regarded as the top sophomore in the state. He averages 11.4 points to go with 8.6 rebounds in his first year at Attucks after spending his freshman year at Franklin Central. He holds offers from Depaul, Illinois and Xavier.
Billy Brown, Tindley
Brown is a sweet shooting sophomore. Something tells me his is going to have his bet game of the season this year to help Tindley move along. He is averaging 8.8 points so far this year.
Miles Colvin, Heritage Christian
Colvin, whose dad Roosevelt Colvin played football in the NFL and won a Super Bowl with New England, is a real athlete and averages 19.1 points with 6.4 rebounds. He has an offer from IUPUI and could lead Heritage Christian to some upsets this week.
Tyler Brown, Herron
Brown leads the City in scoring at 22.5 points per game for Herron. The senior looks to help his team pull the upset this week over Ritter.
Jordan Turner, Ritter
Turner shined playing at Prep Ball Stars Combine this Fall and had some moments playing over the summer for EG10. The junior, who averages 12.2 points, can get hot. Can he and Cannon lead Ritter to some upsets this week?
Donovan Barnett, Attucks
Barnett is a glue player and 4-year varsity contributor for the Tigers, who averages 10.5 points. The 6’5″ senior just picked up his first offer last week from IU Kokomo.
Jaxon Edwards, Cathedral
Edwards, a 6’5″ junior, has the size and athleticism that college programs covet on the wing. He averages 10.7 points for the Irish and is also a good defender.
Jashawn Bates, Tindley
Bates, at 6’5″, has great size on the wing and is multi-skilled. He is a good passer, and has already had some good moments playing for the Tigers first year, including an 18 point performance in the season opening win over Noblesville.
James Smith, Attucks
Smith is known as BJ, and I believe the “B” stands for buckets. He really attacks the rim well and is a solid contributor for Attucks as the second leading scorer at 13.1 points per game and 3.7 rebounds.
Kevin Brodley, Purdue Poly
Brodley leads Poly with a double double average at 16.8 points and 10.8 rebounds. The 6’3″ senior looks to lead Purdue to a win in its first appearance in the city tournament.
The tournament kicks off TONIGHT with the Semi-Finals being held at Tech High School this Saturday. The title game is Monday, January 25th also at Tech. Check out the bracket below.
